The 2024 Waka Ama Secondary School Nationals will attract over 100 Kura Kaupapa Māori and mainstream secondary schools, 1600 secondary school paddlers and 2000 spectators during the four-day event at Lake Tikitapu. The Waka Ama Secondary School Nationals have been running successfully for 20 years, and participation has been consistently increasing as the sport grows throughout Aotearoa. The duration of the event is supported by mana whenua Ngāti Whakaue and Tūhourangi.

The event is inclusive of rangatahi from Year 9 to Year 13, of all abilities and skill levels, and of all ethnicities and cultures. There are some 180 races over the week of competition, producing a platform for our rangatahi to enjoy and celebrate the culture of waka ama with their peers. While there is a focus on participation and competition, the rangatahi display high levels of sportsmanship throughout the event and enjoy the whanaungatanga with other rangatahi. That’s what makes Waka Ama – mā te katoa, mō āke tonu (for all, for life)!
