"School Sport Canterbury is an educational organisation with educational objectives being achieved through school sports programmes"
Who are we? What do we do?
Secondary school sport in Canterbury is promoted by School Sport Canterbury, the office of the Regional Sports Directors.
The office serves 39 Christchurch secondary schools, 7 nearby country schools and 2 Mid Canterbury schools. We offer an information service to 7 schools on the West Coast.
The Sports Director’s Office has a major role of communication with its partner schools, their staff, coaches and students.
The educational needs of young sportspeople in our schools are paramount.
There are two fundamental aims of the Sports Director’s Office:
- To increase and/or maintain participation in physical activity/sport, both in school and in the community, of secondary school students
- To increase the performance and satisfaction of secondary school students in sport
Partner schools have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of championship events and regular competitions in addition to sport education programmes which this office organises.
Secondary school sporting events at provincial, regional, South Island and National levels are organised by this office.
Christchurch is unique among New Zealand cities in that schools close at 2.30pm on Wednesdays to enable students to participate in the sports competition we organise or other sports associations organise.
